One challenge in fiction writing is creating characters who feel like real people instead of collections of personality traits. A protagonist can be brave, intelligent, and kind, but if they always make the right decision and never struggle with anything, readers may find them difficult to relate to.
How do you give your characters flaws that feel believable without making them unlikeable?
I’ve found it useful to think about how a positive trait can become a problem in certain situations. Confidence might turn into stubbornness, loyalty might make someone ignore warning signs, and a desire to help others might prevent a character from respecting boundaries.
Another important question is whether the character recognizes their own weaknesses. Some characters understand their flaws but struggle to change, while others only realize the damage they’ve caused after facing consequences.
What techniques do you use to develop flaws, motivations, and internal conflicts? If you have an example from your own writing, share how the character’s weakness affects the plot.
