I’ll be honest for years I was the person who bought books, stacked them on my shelf, and then let them sit there collecting dust. I’d start a book, get 40 pages in, and then life would get busy and I’d abandon it. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to read, I just never made it a real habit. Then last year I tried something stupidly simple: I committed to just 10 pages a day. That’s it. No pressure, no “I must finish this book by Sunday” deadlines. Just 10 pages before bed, every night. And weirdly, that tiny goal is what finally made it stick. Ten pages turns into 20, 20 turns into a chapter, and before I knew it I was finishing a book every two or three weeks without even feeling like I was trying.
The other thing that helped was quitting books I wasn’t enjoying. I used to force myself to finish everything out of some weird guilt, and that’s what killed my motivation every single time. Now if a book isn’t working for me by page 50, I put it down and move on. No guilt. Life’s too short and there are too many good books out there. Since I made that rule, I’ve read more in the last year than I did in the previous three combined. So I’m curious what’s the one habit or rule that actually got you reading consistently? Was it a page goal, a time of day, a specific genre? I’d love to steal some ideas from you all.
